Parashara a revered maharishi and a prolific author of ancient Indian texts. He’s credited with writing the original version of the Vishnu Purana, one of the most sacred scriptures in Hinduism. Later, his son Vyasa expanded and refined his work, shaping it into its current form. Parashara came from a lineage of distinguished sages, being the grandson of the illustrious Vasishtha and son of Shakti. His contributions to Hindu literature are numerous, with multiple texts referencing him as a prominent author and speaker.
Rishi Jaimini was a founder of the Mimamsa school of Hindu philosophy. He wrote important texts like Mimamsa Sutras and Jaimini Sutras, which focus on rituals as a path to righteousness and moral living. Jaimini believed that the Vedas, ancient Indian scriptures, are the foundation of society and the basis of dharma (righteousness). He was the son of Parashra and he made significant contributions to astrology and he was influenced by his teacher, sage Vyasa.
Rishi Manu was the first man according to Hindu mythology. He survived a big flood and had children, starting the human race. He also wrote an important book called the Manusmriti, which is a guide for Hindu religious laws.Manu appears in the Vedas, the sacred literature of Hinduism, as the performer of the first sacrifice. He is also known as the first king, and most rulers of medieval India traced their genealogy back to him, either through his son (the solar line) or his daughter (the lunar line).
Bhrigu was a respected sage in the ancient Adi-rishi tradition. He was one of the seven most important sages, known as the Saptarshis, and was created by Brahma. Bhrigu was a pioneer in astrology and wrote the first book that predicted the future. He also authored the famous book “Bhrigu Samhita”, which is still a classic in astrology today. According to legend, Bhrigu was a son of Brahma, but not in a physical sense – he was born from Brahma’s mind.
Contributed to the development of Vedic astrology
Rishi Garga the author of the Garga Samhita, was born to Rishi Bharadwaja and Suseela. He lived during the time of Lord Krishna and was the royal priest for the Yadu dynasty. Garga was the one who named the newborn babies, Balarama and Krishna, born to Nandagopal and Yashoda. He told Nanda, the caretaker, about the significance of these divine babies and advised him to protect them from harm and evil forces.
Rishi Narad was a devoted follower of Lord Vishnu and is famous for his worship. He wrote several books on astrology that provide answers to many astrological questions. Narad also wrote the Vaishnav Purana, a sacred text about Lord Vishnu. It is believed that reading the Narada Purana can help people seek forgiveness for their sins and attain spiritual liberation.
Rishi Vasistha was a wise and respected sage who was born twice! First, he was born from Brahma’s mind, and then he was born again to Mitra-Varun and Urvashi. He is one of the oldest and most revered sages in the Vedic tradition and is considered one of the seven great Rishis (Saptarishis). Vasistha is credited with writing a significant part of the Rigveda, an ancient Hindu scripture. He is also known as the teacher of Lord Rama and is the author of the Yoga-Vasishtha, a spiritual text that guides seekers on their journey.
Rishi Kashyapa was a respected sage in Hinduism. He was one of the seven ancient sages, known as the Saptarishis, who contributed to the Rigveda. Kashyapa was born to Rishi Marichi and Kala, and his grandfather was Brahma Dev, the creator of the universe. Kashyapa is known for composing a hymn in praise of Soma, a sacred plant, which is part of the Rigveda. He is considered a wise and revered figure in Hindu tradition.
Rishi Lomasha was a wise sage in Hindu mythology. He is mainly known for his role in the epic Mahabharata, where he shares many legendary stories with the Pandavas brothers during their time in the forest. Lomasha’s father was Sardaula, and he is remembered for his wisdom and teachings that have been passed down through generations.
Rishi Badarayana was a renowned Indian philosopher and sage who authored the Brahma Sutras, a foundational text of the Vedanta school of Hindu philosophy. The Brahma Sutras, along with the Upanishads and Bhagavad Gita, form the core of Hindu scriptures. According to tradition, Badarayana, also known as Vyasa, composed the epic Mahabharata and the Brahma Sutras in the sacred region of Badarinath. His name, Badarayana, reflects his connection to this holy place.
